    Aquamarine in Antiquity

It is not always easy to trace the history of aquamarine in Antiquity because confusion sometimes exists. The Egyptians, Greeks and Romans know the difference between an emerald, a sapphire and an aquamarine. The Romans call the chrysocolles "angites" or "callaïs" and aquamarines "beryls".

In ancient Egypt, the aquamarine designated " zeberdjed " is extracted in the same mines as the emerald (" zemroud ") , in the vicinity of Aswan at Mount Zabarah. Their colors vary from deep green to very light green and have an almost perfect clarity. Much less valued than emeralds, aquamarines are nevertheless frequently associated with them.

The hardness of aquamarines is conducive to the art of intaglio (intaglio engraving), which is commonly practiced in Egypt, Greece and especially in Rome where engraving of emerald is prohibited. The artists sign their works, thus Quintillius realizes a Neptune mounted on sea horses, Hyllus represents a Hercules drinker on an aquamarine intended for the cruel Emperor Commodus (2nd century AD).

Julie's intaglio made in the 1st century AD by the Greek sculptor Evodos

The most famous of these engravings remains Julie's intaglio made in the 1st century AD by the Greek sculptor Evodos . It represents the daughter of Emperor Titus. This magnificent aquamarine measures 5 cm high by 4 wide, very clear and transparent, it is one of the most beautiful ancient gems that have come down to us.

    Aquamarine in the Middle Ages

In the Middle Ages, the intaglio was assembled in a sumptuous composition of jewelry. The whole took the name of Escrain (jewel case) from Charlemagne, his grandson, King Charles the Bald, donated it to the royal abbey of Saint-Denis. The portrait of Julie, surrounded by sapphires and pearls, surmounts a gold grid covered with precious stones. This masterpiece of Carolingian goldsmithery has unfortunately disappeared, only a few engravings and the top of the treasure remain: the ancient engraved aquamarine surrounded by medieval gems. Julie's intaglio is kept in the Medal Cabinet of the National Library in Paris.

In the 13th century, the grimoire entitled " Les secrets admirable du Grand Albert " was attributed, perhaps wrongly, to the Dominican brother Albert Le Grand, a famous naturalist. The author may have seen Julie's intaglio because his description of aquamarine is surprisingly close: "pale in color and transparent like water ...". He adds: "With him (the beryl), we fear no enemy, we win all the trials. It also makes children studious and intelligent ”. This book describing the "magic virtues of minerals" has been very successful for centuries.

Aquamarine would therefore have beneficial effects linked most of the time to the transparency of water and the sea. With it, everything becomes clear, the view, the ideas and the future also because the crystal balls in aquamarines are highly prized in clairvoyance. But these are not the only properties that we lend to aquamarine ... What are the benefits and virtues that we attribute in lithotherapy to this beautiful blue crystal?
